Development News and Links

This is the official web site of Hollybrooke, a subdivision of Derwood, Maryland. Over 231 families are happy to call Hollybrooke their home.

The wider neighborhood is going to change. The ICC highway across Shady Grove, through the Lake Needwood and Rockville Park areas is going to change the traffic flow.

The county has approved redeveloping county held service land on Crabbs Branch, between Redland Road and Shady Grove into high density housing. We will get up to 6000 units (apartments, townhomes, houses) near the Shady Grove Metro Station. Plans for schools and social centers are fuzzy at best.

The displaced county facilities will be moved to other large land blocks elsewhere in the county consistent with the need for large spaces, and proximity to roadways and other county resources. An early proposal is that the Gude Landfill be redeveloped to increase a 5 acre mulch transfer site on the east side to 10 Acres and to put the school bus depot and refueling station up on about 30 acres on the west side, on the hill overlooking the Derwood Station neighborhood. The bus depot has been stopped due to environmental and cost issues. The environmental impact of the commercial size wood processing and transfer is now being raised.

The adhoc Gude Landfill Concerned Citizens comittee has been formed with Bob Day, Keith Ligon, Julia Tillery, Dean Dozier, and Dave Peterson driving it, as well as membership by many others including the presidents of the 3 Derwood HOAs. The committee has met with County Councilors, and written to various levels of government, done extensive research in County documents and reviewed County supplied environmental data to develop a sound case against the forms of development on the landfill, proposed by the County Executive.

A separate website is being set up using blogging software to more easily accumulate, display, and update Gude Landfill Concerned Citizens issues. (This website is largely assembled manually and is not ammenable to quick updates)

Gude Men's Shelter renamed: Gude Drive Complex

June 18th 2009 - The Gude Men's Shelter has been renamed The Gude Drive Complex. It was ceremonially opened with a large gathering of County officials (Ike Leggett and Phil Andrews) and about 100 social services related administrators and professionals. This was a $6 Million renovation involving a large number of human services organizations in the County, along with builders associations in addition to the County's funding. TV cameras were present and the clips were to be posted on the County website.
